How the pieces fit
A Portuguese version of this collection, with a page for each use case, is at /brasil.
- For an address form: call a CEP API when the eighth digit is typed and fill street, district, city and state.
- For company sign-up: validate the CNPJ check digits locally first, then query the registry once.
- For amounts in reais: use PTAX for accounting and contracts, and say which day’s rate it is.
Questions
Which free API should I use for CEP lookup?
BrasilAPI CEP v2 or ViaCEP. Both need no key and allow browser calls. BrasilAPI queries several providers and returns the first that answers, which helps when one of them is down.
Is there a free CNPJ API?
Yes: BrasilAPI, CNPJ.ws public and ReceitaWS return registry data without a key. All of them limit how many lookups you can make per minute.
What is PTAX?
PTAX is the reference exchange rate calculated by the Banco Central do Brasil for each business day. It is the rate used in contracts and accounting, and it is not available for weekends or holidays.
