How the CORS mark is measured

Public lists usually carry a “CORS: yes / no / unknown” column that someone filled in once. Ours is the result of a request. The verifier sends the sample GET with the header Origin: https://freeapi.today and looks at Access-Control-Allow-Origin in the answer. If it is * or our origin, a browser would let a page read the response, and the API gets the mark.

What the mark does not cover

It describes a simple GET without custom headers. A request with an Authorization header, a JSON Content-Type or a method other than GET, HEAD or POST triggers a preflight OPTIONS request first, and some APIs that answer GET correctly do not answer the preflight.

Why we do not offer a proxy

A CORS proxy that forwards any URL is an open relay: it can be used to hide the origin of abusive traffic, and whoever runs it can read everything that passes through. For APIs without CORS headers, this site shows the response our verifier stored and gives you snippets to run from your own machine or server.

Questions

What is CORS, in one paragraph?

Browsers block a page from reading an answer that came from another origin unless that answer carries an Access-Control-Allow-Origin header naming the page’s origin or "*". Servers and command-line tools ignore this rule, which is why a URL can work in curl and fail in fetch.

How do you test for CORS?

The verifier sends its request with the header Origin: https://freeapi.today and checks whether Access-Control-Allow-Origin in the answer is "*" or that origin. It is a measurement of a simple GET, not a claim copied from documentation.

An API is marked CORS but my request fails. Why?

The check covers a simple GET. If you add custom headers or use another method, the browser first sends a preflight OPTIONS request, and the API may not answer it. Remove custom headers or call the API from your server.

Can I get around CORS with a proxy?

A public CORS proxy forwards your users’ requests through someone else’s server, which can read and change them, and can disappear at any time. This site does not run one. If an API has no CORS headers, call it from your own backend or a serverless function.
